Hasbro CEO Bullish On Star Wars Toys

Despite declining toy and merchandise sales as detailed here and here, Hasbro’s CEO remains stubbornly bullish on Star Wars toys.  The Street reports:

“I remain totally bullish on Star Wars,” Goldner told TheStreet Monday at Hasbro’s annual toy exhibition.

Pointed out Goldner on a conference call with analysts, “And really I don’t see it as at all as Star Wars fatigue, I think the entertainment has been quite good.”

Good-Fellas-Hilarious

“I think the entertainment has been quite good.”

Nevertheless, Hasbro is taking steps to minimize risk:

“To minimize risk going forward, Hasbro will release its Star Wars toy inventory closer to a movie release. For example, the latest Star Wars toys will start hitting retailers in April ahead of the May 25 release of Solo: A Star Wars Story.”

Some of those steps to minimize risk involves crowdsourcing toys:

“Jabba’s Sail Barge (the Khetanna) from Hasbro’s Vintage Collection is the first epic toy creation under Hasbro’s crowdfunding platform HasLab, which the company launched Saturday (Feb. 17) here at Toy Fair. Like other crowdfunding sites, HasLab is a platform that allows fans to back projects in return for the final product when it’s ready. Hasbro will only make Jabba’s Sail Barge if it gets at least 5,000 backers by April 3. The playset, which costs $499.99, is available for pre-order at the website (www.hasbrolab.com) only during that 45-day period, so you’ll have to back it by that deadline if you want to get your hands on it.”

Forbes lists one of the reasons for crowdfunding a project as reducing risk.  We can then infer that Hasbro is not willing to take the total risk on this particular toy.  It will be interesting to see if Hasbro expands crowdfunding to other Star Wars toys as well, particularly now that some are reporting that the Han Solo movie toys due to be released in April are “super disappointing.”

Bull

Disney about to get trampled by bull.
