Winter Came For Wendig Instead

“You can have this back.” ~Lucasfilm Customer.

Back in June, writer GeekGirlDiva posted the following on Twitter:

Lucasfilm representatives and their cheerleaders have made much of the distinction between employee, freelancer, contractor, and sub-contractor.  Today we find out that the distinction doesn’t matter much to employers, and that the freelancer immunity card is completely worthless.

It’s being reported by multiple outlets, that Chuck Wendig, author of Star Wars Aftermath, has been let go from Marvel comics, and is also being dropped from an unannounced Star Wars book, presumably to be published by Del Rey.

Hollywood Reporter:

Chuck Wendig, the New York Times best-selling author of the Star Wars: Aftermath series of novels, has been fired by Marvel Entertainment, he said on Twitter Friday. That leaves the future of numerous previously announced Star Wars projects, that Wendig was attached to, uncertain as a result.

In a series of tweets, Wendig — who was working on both the five-issue Shadow of Vader miniseries and an additional, currently unannounced, Star Wars series for the publisher — revealed that he had been fired by Marvel in the middle of his work on the titles because, in his words, “of the negativity and vulgarity that my tweets bring. Seriously, that’s what Mark [Paniccia], the editor said. It was too much vulgarity, too much negativity on my part.”

Bounding Into Comics writes:

Star Wars novelist and comic book writer Chuck Wendig announced that Marvel fired him after they just announced he would be writing the Shadow of Vader series.

You can see the announcement made by Wendig himself here:

So after making the announcement that he’s been fired in one tweet, he then immediately spends 6 tweets using the LGBT community as a shield to defend his politics, excuse his public online behavior, and frame himself as a social justice martyr who was a victim of alt-right harassment.  Obviously, it’s all pure poppycock, but that’s Chuck Wendig.

In any case, I’d like to read the police reports on all that harassment.

It’s all Russian Bots, Chuck.  Rian Johnson and a college professor told us so.

Those videos clearly opened the eyes of Wendig’s employers.  But I’ll link to some more below.

So we’re back to the martyr narrative.

I’ll address parts of his blog post below.

I hear #ComicsGate is hiring.

I’m not sure if that was a complete sentence.

Onto his blog post.

And privately, I was told by folks inside LFL that there was no worry here, that they valued that I spoke out both speaking up for myself and for STAR WARS, which has always honestly been a progressive brand and company. And it made me very proud to work for them, too, not just because — holy hell, basking in the glow of STAR WARS, but because the people were great, and they totally got it.

So what Chuck is saying here, is that he thought he was safe to behave any way he liked, because it was all one big happy Collective.  He can’t believe they lied to him and betrayed his trust.

(Hell, a lot of the people inside LFL have experience considerable harassment. I mean, that’s not news, but Kelly Marie-Tran? Bueller? Bueller?)

Yeah, that’s been discredited Chuck.

After the 8th paragraph of going on about his trials and tribulations with the purely imaginary alt-right trolls, he finally spills the beans about why he was fired.

Basically, because I was not civil.

No kidding.  So it didn’t have anything to do with LGBT characters in a book you published 3 years ago in 2015.  But instead, it had everything to do with you telling GOP members to throw themselves into a woodchipper, among a variety of other things.  Which can be read about here, here, here, here, here, here, here, here, here, here, here, here, here, here, here, and here, and probably in more places as well.

My understanding over this call was that this was a Marvel decision, not an LFL decision, but I can’t really confirm that. The editor said he had made the call. He seemed genuinely upset at my tweets and profanity, so maybe that’s accurate. And again, that’s his right to do so. If they honestly feel that my presence will damage the book, I don’t want that. I want the book to shine, and artists like Juanan Ramirez and Greg Smallwood to do their amazing thing. Artists like that are gods in my mind, so I’m happy to not distract from their literal magic.

Well, why can’t you confirm that Chuck?  Aren’t you the guy who kept telling everyone with supreme confidence that you didn’t work for Lucasfilm?  Are you unwittingly letting the cat out of the bag here, and letting us know that Lucasfilm did indeed have some authority over you?

But it does set a troubling precedent. One we’ve seen already – James Gunn, Jessica White, and so on – of folks fired because they riled up the wasp’s nest of asterisk-gate.

I believe the proper term you’re looking for here Chuck, is Geeker Gate.

And it seems odd to be mad that I’m mad about politics when – well, look around. Climate change, kids in cages, sexual harassers at the topmost tiers of power, and so on. A call for civility as the PA GOP candidate threatens Tom Wolf with a golf cleat stomping. I dunno, man.

Of course, you don’t know.  Those problems are all figments of the SJW imagination and have no basis in any kind of factual reality, except to be distortions of it in some cases.  So how would you know anything at all?

I know it hands Comicsgate a big win. It will embolden them.

Chuck, you’re low hanging fruit, with an over-inflated sense of self-importance.

But they won — I’m out of Marvel and, I guess for now, at least, out of any kind of Star Wars. Do your victory lap, I guess.

There’s no joy to be had here.  There’s nothing happy about a man losing his job even when it’s for atrocious misbehavior.  We can only hope that this unfortunate lesson is learned by those who feel protected by freelancer immunity.  But if they’re SJWs, then they won’t.  Instead, they’ll double down.

(Just please leave me out of it.)

Indeed.  With Wendig out of Lucasfilm, there won’t be much of a reason to address him in any way, provided Lucasfilm doesn’t rehire him and provided that Wendig isn’t making all of this up just to punk #TheFandomMenace.

I have a dire fear this is going to get a whole lot worse before it gets better.

Only if people like Chuck get control.

Chuck and other SJWs are highly unlikely to learn from this experience.  In fact, Chuck is prattling on as though it were a simple expletive that got him fired.

And even though the only person on Earth who is responsible for Chuck Wendig getting fired is Chuck Wendig himself, SJWs will perceive this as a scalp won by the normal side.  As such, they will now be organizing to claim a scalp of their own.  In fact, the seething and frothing have already begun.

You may remember The Mary Sue’s Kate Gardner from such classics as Let’s Talk About the Destructive Toxicity of Star Wars Fans, and Star Wars Fans Now Going After Lucasfilm Employees (But There’s Hope for Fandom Yet).

Now she writes a piece entitled, Marvel Fires Star Wars Author Chuck Wendig for Not Being Civil, and We’re Furious.

Here we go.

Let me preface this piece by saying that I am not an unbiased source when it comes to my feelings on Chuck Wendig and his politics. With his Aftermath series, and with the character of Sinjir, I felt seen for the first time by a franchise that categorically denied my existence as a queer person.

A movie about “space wizards with laser swords” denied your existence?  So what?  It also denies the existence of freckled albinos with goiters.  You need to let go of this adolescent need to see your own reflection in entertainment.  Just go look in the mirror for a couple of hours if you have to.

Wendig’s books are fantastic. His presence on Twitter is charming, and I’ll never look at heirloom apples without laughing. Furthermore, I view him as an ally in the ongoing fight not only for representation in media but in terms of actual, real-life politics.

Yes, as charming as a drunken uncle struggling with dementia.

So imagine my shock and horror when I refreshed Twitter today to see him announce that he had been fired by Marvel off of their Star Wars titles. Because of him being vocal and political on Twitter.

I imagine it was pretty funny.

In a lengthy and informative Twitter thread, Wendig detailed his ongoing relationship with Lucasfilm and Marvel, starting with the Aftermath trilogy.

It’s worth noting that he has been receiving serious and targeted harassment since 2015 and the big reveal that the book contained three queer characters. It has only been worse since then—as a fan, I’ve watched as he’s dealt with trolls who resented a nonbinary character in Life Debt and Empire’s End, who resented that he liked The Last Jedi, who got angry when he spoke about his politics. And now, a week after he was announced as the writer for the Shadow of Vader miniseries, he has been fired.

It’s also worth noting, that SJWs will now endlessly parrot Wendig’s martyr/victim narrative moving forward.

Worse is that, while he says he does not know if Lucasfilm had a hand in the decision, he also tweeted that he had previously had support from Lucasfilm with regards to his social media presence and the way he dealt with harassment.

This is complete and utter bullshit.

Oh, the humanity!

This is not a situation like James Gunn, or someone who gets pulled off a project because they spew bigotry and hate. This is a man being fired for not taking bullshit from a horde of trolls who have been harassing him for years for political views that helped shoot his books to the top of the best-seller list. He is literally being shut down for the fact that he expressed his politics and people got mad at him for doing so.

No.  He isn’t being shut down at all.  He’s still free to spew his uneducated idiocy as often as he likes.

It does hand Comicsgate a big win. It hands people who want to see their media homogenized and reduced down to the same white cishet male stories a massive win. Worse, it sends a message that if you want to work for a big title, keep your mouth shut and don’t talk about politics, even though at this point in the game silence is nearly complicity.

Actually, silence is golden.  But to your point, complicity with what?  Civilized behavior?

And why are you babbling about homogenization?  Aren’t you idiot SJWs chasing ComicsGaters all over the internet and in the real world in an attempt to ensure that the only stories that get told are yours?

No, you don’t necessarily have to keep your mouth shut about politics if you work for a big title.  But maybe don’t suggest that your political allies throw themselves into a woodchipper, or encourage your political allies to kick them in the face with a boot.  M’kay?

All art is political, and apparently people being angry that politics in certain works are progressive matters more than artists actually standing up for what’s right.

Are you telling me that my grandmother’s mushroom and sunflower latch hooks are political?  Honestly, could you stop stupidly parroting your idiot professors?  You think all art is political because you don’t know how to think about anything other than politics.  It’s how you’ve been indoctrinated in your formal education to think.

This is frightening. I won’t call it censorship, but it’s pretty close. It’s a big message saying keep your mouth shut and take the abuse, because apparently defending yourself (and others around you) is as bad as being a troll. It’s “vulgar.” It’s not “civil.” Marvel has known about Wendig’s politics since 2015 at the very earliest, but suddenly there’s a problem with him being his usual self and using his platform for good? There’s a whole stunning host of implications there.

It’s not close at all.  Censorship is when government decides what speech can or cannot be spoken.  For instance, the Fairness Doctrine or Net Neutrality.  It’s not a company firing an employee for telling their customers to piss off.  The only real implication here is that SJWs have no fundamental understanding of censorship or free speech.

But I’ll let Chuck Wendig himself explain it to you.  Chuck, take it away…

This is not a first amendment issue, and I won’t frame it as such — despite the ironic fact that the same dipshits who probably mob-reported me would exclaim exactly that upon their own suspensions. Twitter can do whatever it wants. It can ban me arbitrarily for posting too many heirloom apple reviews. (YOU’LL NEVER STOP ME.) Twitter, again, is an amazing service governed by a shit company with zero ethos

Additionally, here’s a graphic that explains things briefly and simply:

Back to Ms. Garner:

Wendig encourages us to support the stories coming out of Marvel and Star Wars despite all this, with more grace than I believe they currently deserve because of these chilling implications. Thankfully, most of the reactions I’ve seen in reaction to this have been equally as furious.

You’re furious because you’re an uneducated SJW savage.

Marvel, this isn’t a good look. This is bullshit. Complete and utter bullshit. So maybe step back and reconsider this, because you’re sending a massively dangerous message not only to creators but to the trolls who haunt them.

You are demanding silence and civility in the place of people expressing political views that piss off the trolls and incels.

Now how is anyone supposed to take you seriously when you use the adolescent pejorative “incel?”

And for the record, if this happened to a white male author, imagine what it must be like for creatives who don’t have the same privileges, who deal with even worse harassment?

You’d think that a white male getting the boot would discredit the whole “white privilege” nonsense.  But no, the SJW’s notorious bigotry against the white male had to make its appearance before the end of this piece I suppose.  But guess what, those other creatives who don’t have such imaginary privileges, who haven’t told people to throw themselves into a wood chipper, are likely still employed.

What a mess of a world we live in.

SJWs made the mess.  As always, it’s left to normal people to clean it up.

Now, whether this was a decision from Disney, Lucasfilm, Del Rey, or Marvel, or some combination of the above, is unknown.  It’s possible that they may be using Chuck Wendig to make an example of to the rest of their staff, in whatever capacity they may work in.  It’ll be interesting to see the reactions to all of this from Lucasfilm’s freelancer crowd in the…aftermath.

But it’s also possible, that Lucasfilm is giving us some low hanging fruit in an effort to appease #TheFandomMenace in advance of Episode IX.

However, all of the outlets I see reporting on this, are only reporting on Wendig’s own statements.  I haven’t seen any official statements from Disney, Lucasfilm, Del Rey, or Marvel.  So it’s possible that this could be a ruse.  I’d hate to find out that Wendig was taken off of these books, only because he was tapped to write Rian Johnson’s trilogy.  Because that is exactly something that today’s Lucasfilm would do.

Below are some other perspectives on this story:

  1. Prediction: Wendig rides the “I got fired by geeker gate” victim narrative to set up Indiegogo for a new, original Chuck Wendig novel and pulls in 100k++ in contributions while continuing his unhinged rants on twitter and/or Youtube.

  2. The progressives/Sorosians utilize something called the Victim Heirarchy, where one’s gender, sexuality, race etc determine one’s worth. Completely removes individual merits and faults and reduces one to a simple statistic. Anti-human. Anti-freedom.

A never-ending morass of angst and anger that consumes whatever it touches. And what a Wendig does (as a white male) to ensure a secure place in this structure amounts to nothing more than betrayal of his own race and gender in order to suck up to the SJW mob.

  3. Good point about him announcing his own firing, has there been no statement at all from the employers? That’s suspect… but it could just be corporate cowardice.

Somebody should inform the powers-that-be, that plugging this one rather small and insignificant hole is not going to save their sinking ship, which is already more than half submerged.

  4. Beautiful.

Looks like my “Chuck, you’re emblematic of the current awful culture at LucasFilm, but nothing lasts forever” comment YESTERDAY was foresight indeed!

Good riddance, you disgusting, puerile idiot.
