Sales Of Star Wars Marvel Comics Continue To Slide

DoctorAphra

Barking at men is high adventure for Dr. Aphra.

In December 2018, I wrote a blog post about how Star Wars Marvel Comics saw a “horrible decline” since their high sales around the time of The Force Awakens release, according to Comichron.  Here were the sales comparisons then:

Comic1

Shortly thereafter in February of 2019, rumors started to swirl around the interwebs that Marvel would release issue #108 of the original Legends Marvel Comic Book run.  This rumor proved to be true, and issue #108 would be published in May 2019.  It seemed as though decision makers were pulling a “member Jaxxon?” stunt in order to bring readers back to the comics.

In March of 2019, other rumors began to swirl around the interwebs which said that Disney was preparing to shut down Marvel Comics altogether.  Some suggested that it would be easy to do this if they shifted prodction of the comics to IDW, which was already producing Star Wars comics.  But then a few days later in that same March, that IDW investors were requesting to sell the company.

Here were the Comichron sales figures at that time:

Marvel2

A reader of this blog then offered some further analysis in the way of a spreadsheet, and you can read about that here.

Now comes an interesting series of tweets from Sr. VP of Programming of iHeartMedia, Scott Ryfun.

Maybe it’s time for a Doctor Aphra/Captain Marvel crossover event.

  1. Aphra was kinda cool, when she was in the Vader comics. She added a layer to that.

As a standalone, however, she can’t stand alone. There is nothing in her story or her character that is compelling. She’s Space Lara Croft, that’s about it.

  2. First issue of Aphra was kinda cool, but became predictable and dull after that. I have culled my pull list dramatically and will do so again.

I have been picking up and filling holes in my Dark Horse collection lately and have noticed not only are the quality of the stories far superior, but also the quality of the paper it’s printed on. Dark Horse used thicker paper to print on. Marvel is so thin it’s almost transparent. Says it all really.

  3. I am asking this seriously and not making a joke, as I dont read these comics, is Doctor Aphra a lesbian/bi character or one they are about to make gay? I thought I had heard something about this comic like that.

  5. She is – and you could see it coming from a mile away. The hint was dropped in the first or second issue. She’s got a thing for a female imperial officer. The best thing about those comics are her two droids. How Aphra won Hasbro’s fan choice BS6 poll is pretty weird though.

  6. Female imperial officer? So this comic like so many others just manages to capture things that we didn’t see in the films, things that clearly didn’t exist. Is this the same female imperial officer from the garbage books who was actually in command during the battle of Endor? Or the black woman tie fighter pilot? Or could she be female rebel pilot we are now told was in the lone y-wing that survived the Death Star attack?
